US Leads North American Synchrophasor Market
The US has the largest grid in North America and accounts
for the majority of the renewable and distributed energy generation in the
region. It is also a leading market in terms of smart grid investment and
project funding. North America is the base for many Electric Vehicle (EV),
microgrid, and smart meter manufacturers, as well as companies involved in the
manufacture of other microgrid and smart grid-related equipment. It also leads
the North American Synchrophasor Initiative (NASPI). The US is the leading
country in the synchrophasor market in North America in terms of value and sales,
with a 76% share, followed by Canada with 17% and Mexico with the remaining 7%.
China Holds the Lowest Average Price per Synchrophasor
Unit
The average price of a synchrophasor in China is less
than half of the price in most developed countries, because they are locally
manufactured and tailor-made to specific lower standards and requirements
stipulated by the government. The average price of a synchrophasor unit
amounted to $3,000 per unit in 2013.
New Smart Grid and Transmission Infrastructure Investment
Increases Synchrophasor Demand
Synchrophasors are wide area measurement systems that
enable the measurement of voltage and current from different places to provide
a detailed view of transmission systems. Their implementation is expected to
improve the visibility and reliability of the electric grid for system
operators, and they have therefore become an essential part of smart grid investment
for utilities and transmission system operators. Global smart grid investment
is expected to modernize electric grids in order to support higher energy loads
and reduce Transmission and Distribution (T&D) losses.
The US, Mexico and China currently lead the deployment of
synchrophasors in their respective electric grids. Countries such as India,
Brazil, South Africa, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Sweden have also implemented
synchrophasor technology as pilot projects with positive results, and India and
Brazil plan to further increase the number of synchrophasors in their electric
grid infrastructure, which will increase demand.
